Post Roe Sex at SRSU
By Gisselle Rueda, Skyline Reporter
ALPINE- The recent overturn of Roe V. Wade and the possible criminalization of abortion in Texas has triggered sexual behavioral changes and introspective discussion amongst Sul Ross State University Students.
The Skyline interviewed 20 Sul Ross students – half male and half female - to discuss their opinions and how they were adapting to the new intimacy landscape after the controversial US Supreme Court decision on a woman’s right to choose whether to have an abortion.
While the majority of the women said that they have remained careful in their sexual life, the use of birth control was a focus of their comments. Most of these women use contraceptives yet expressed that they feel more worried than ever about the possibility of an unwanted pregnancy.
The majority of the men said they are also more anxious about an unwanted pregnancy and will use condoms to avoid it.
Overall, a majority of respondents said they are against the criminalization of abortion. Even those who oppose abortion said it was warranted in cases of rape and incest.
More than two-thirds said that they were pro-choice, while five of them said they leaned more towards pro-life beliefs. Three out of the five individuals who said they leaned more towards pro-life beliefs were women while the other two were men. The 15 pro-choice individuals were in favor of legalizing abortion in order to provide women who choose to terminate a pregnancy with a safe outcome.
