ALPINE - Students vaping on school grounds has become a significant issue and Alpine High School is no exception. Serious health problems can emerge as a result of prolonged vaping and pose a significant threat to students. Efforts to curb the usage of vape devices on school grounds have proven ineffective as the problem persists.

ALPINE - When I was first asked by Skyline Faculty Advisor Sid Balman to join the newspaper staff in 2022, my initial response was a less-than-enthusiastic, “I’ll think about it.” I never had any intention of becoming a journalist to that point, much less finding myself in my current position as Skyline Editor-In-Chief. However, what inevitably sent me on this two-year-long journalistic journey was a simple statement of fact from my mother when I told her about the offer: “Poopie worked with the Skyline, too.”
ALPINE - Just as this school year at Sul Ross began percolating, so did a new coffee shop in town.

ALPINE – They say that in your last moments, your life flashes before your eyes. While I am not knowingly in my final days, I am closing a chapter and reflecting on its pages. In these last, and very few, remaining weeks of school, in a semester that has blown by at the speed of light, my college experience is a common theme in my reverie.

ALPINE – Starting college in the middle of the pandemic with a five-month-old baby to take care of was a lot to juggle, but despite the obstacles she faced, Ashley Maldonado, a recent Sul Ross State University graduate, finished her bachelor’s degree with honors and accomplished a multitude of things along the way.

After months of investigation and research, multiple interviews and weeks of preparation, I looked out across a room full of people staring back at me, waiting to hear what I had to say. All of the chairs in the room were filled by my peers and advisors from across the nation. Alongside names such as Alexis Scott, whose grandfather founded the nation’s first black-owned daily newspaper, the Atlanta Daily World, and Charles M. Blow, reporter, commentator and op-ed columnist for The New York Times, was Brooke Manuel, a 26-year-old student journalist from a town of less than 20,000 people chasing her dream.

Alpine – The Sul Ross State University Animal Science research program purchased 12 emaciated horses that were headed to the slaughterhouse for use in research projects that were conducted by undergraduate and graduate students. Two out of those 12 horses were pregnant, and they have now given birth to healthy foals.
