Breaking News: Sul Ross Alerts Campus to Online Threat from Former Student

ALPINE- In light of the tragic school shooting in Tennessee two days ago, Sul Ross State University alerted staff and students Wednesday about threats on social media made by a former student and football player who had been expelled.  

Vice President of Student Affairs Ben Telesca told the Skyline that a threat was made to two students. Telesca and the alert issued by the university via email to staff and students emphasized that there was no “imminent danger,” and that the individual who issued the threat to two football players was not currently in Alpine. However, given the fatal shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, it was prudent to “say something if you see something.” 

University officials said local law enforcement had also been alerted. 

In a group chat with the university football team, head football coach Barry Derickson warned his players to “not associate (with the former player who made the threat) on social media or text. If seen on campus call UPD.” 

The former student was expelled from Sul Ross for currently unknown reasons. It is unclear what social media thread these messages are referring to.
