Sexual Assault Awareness Month at Sul Ross

By Eliya Alvidrez, Skyline Editor

ALPINE – April is recognized as sexual assault awareness month. Communities across the country take the initiative to do their part in creating awareness by educating others about sexual violence, how to prevent it, and offering support to survivors.

Statistics show that one in four women and one in fourteen men have experienced some form of sexual assault. It is unknown how many more cases have and will continue to go unreported.

Sul Ross organizations including the Sul Ross Honors Club, the Office of Counseling and Accessibility Services, the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend, the Sul Ross Psychology Club, and the Sul Ross Softball team are taking action by hosting events that are designed to build commitment within the community to end sexual assault.

Upcoming Events:

- April 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29: Wear Teal Tuesdays
Every Tuesday of the month is “Wear Teal Tuesday.” Teal is the color designated for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Wear teal to show your support for victims of sexual violence.

- April 8: Put a Nail in It!
In the UC lobby, we will be painting ring fingernails teal. Our teal fingernails will demonstrate our commitment to being part of the solution.

- April 22: Safety Walk
After the Student Organization Ceremony and once it gets dark, we’re going to walk the campus and identify hazards.

- April 23: Wear Denim Day
In 1992, a young Italian woman was raped. In 1999, her rapist’s conviction was overturned by the Italian High Court. The High Court supported the rapist’s argument that because the young woman had removed her jeans (at the demand of the man threatening to hurt her), she had consented to being raped. This argument infuriated many and the Peace Over Violence movement organized the first Denim Day in 1999.

- April 25: Softball for Consent!
Come to the SRSU Softball field to cheer on the Lady Lobos as they play Western New Mexico. The Lady Lobos also want to be sure that everyone understands the concept of consent. The first game starts at 4:00 pm, and the second game starts at 6:00 pm.
