SRSU Spent $2 Million On Real Estate In Alpine

By Ryan Weyl, Skyline Reporter

ALPINE - Sul Ross State University recently acquired two buildings off campus in the heart of Alpine, but plans for future use of the properties remain a mystery.

In a small town like Alpine, word spreads fast. Many people around town have caught wind of Sul Ross’ acquisition of the original Porter’s building and another building off East Holland Street.

Sul Ross acquired the two properties for approximately $2 million.

When the Skyline spoke with Betse Esparza, the director of university communications at SRSU, she told the Skyline that the money came out of the university’s investment fund. This fund pulls money from operating funds and university endowments with the intent of investing money in outside ventures.

The new properties may be utilized by either the Art or Nursing department, but no final decisions have been made, and the Skyline could not determine who is responsible for the decision.

Esparza said that the decision has yet to be made and will be made strictly on the assessment of need for their various departments.
