Alpha Lobos Sorority Changes Trajectory

By Brooke Manuel, Skyline Editor

ALPINE – After low interest from students during their first semester of operations, the Alpha Lobos Sorority, a start-up sorority at Sul Ross State University that welcomed all individuals who identified with she/her/hers pronouns, has decided to become the Alpha Lobos Club, which invites all students to join and focuses on mental health.

During the Spring 2023 semester, Dafne Baeza, an SRSU student, founded the Alpha Lobos Sorority in hopes of cultivating a family atmosphere and safe space for all members.

The Alpha Lobos Sorority had only six people join in the Spring and ended the semester with just four members.

“Many people did not join since we were known as a sorority,” Baeza, the Alpha Lobos Club president, said.

In an effort to boost membership, Baeza and Mary Schwartze, SRSU’s director of counseling and accessibility services, decided to turn the sorority into a club.

Sixteen students attended the Alpha Lobos’ first meeting of the Fall 2023 semester, seven men and nine women.

As a club, the Alpha Lobos promote mental health on the Sul Ross campus.

“We are a club that is focused on mental health...We know that college life can be quite taxing, so we want to provide people with tools (and help them surround themselves with people) that can help them with taking care of their mental health,” Sinai Valdez Dominguez, a member of the Alpha Lobos Club, said.

In celebration of World Mental Health Day, the Alpha Lobos Club would like to invite students to join them in games of cornhole, a potato sack race, and tug of war on October 10 outside the Morgan University Center. Students are also welcome to pick up a complimentary “Mental Health Matters” t-shirt in the Counseling and Accessibility Services office, which is located in Ferguson Hall 112. The Alpha Lobos will be wearing their green “Mental Health Matters” t-shirts on October 12.

The Alpha Lobos meet in Ferguson Hall 115 on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m.
