Burned Dryer in Lobo Village 2

ALPINE - On Friday, September 20, fire alarms rang throughout Lobo Village 2 and all students and staff were evacuated from the building when the community dryer in the dorm laundry room suddenly caught fire.

The Alpine Fire Department was called to campus to address the incident. The fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported. The only damages were flooding in the nearby dorm living areas due to the sprinklers, and the dryer itself. No resident bedrooms were affected, and no residents were displaced.

“Custodial staff showed up to handle the water damage. They came in a great mood and handled the situation quickly and efficiently,” Dean of Students Suzanne Harris said.

Students were not allowed back into the building while the scene was under investigation by university police. The investigation lasted almost two hours, and no cause has been determined. Sul Ross provided music, games, and food outside of the dorm until all the hazards were cleared.

Once let back into the building, students were advised by residential living to open their windows to air out any smells from the smoke.

“We have reached out to the manufacturer and are awaiting a response,” Director of Residential Living Yuan Zhou said.

For the time being, the entire first floor laundry room is closed off and not available for use until further notice.
