By Eric Loy, Skyline Reporter
ALPINE – Sul Ross State University male students, over a third identifying as Hispanic, said in a recent campus poll that they plan to vote for former President Donald Trump, while female student were evenly split between Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris and undecided.
The poll of 83 students, conducted between Oct. 14 and Oct. 20, mirrored the demographic and political split of voters in Texas, although the Sul Ross student body is more heavily represented by Hispanics than the state as a whole. The margin of error was +/- 10 percent.
With the election now less than a week away, it is safe to say that this is perhaps one of the most politically divisive ballots of our lifetime. With political tensions at a seemingly all-time high the Skyline asked Sul Ross students who they were voting for in order to gauge the attitudes and tendencies of a small portion of the demographic that will play a huge role in the outcome of the election.
The poll revealed:
62.2 percent of male students said they support Trump
32.5 percent of women support Trump, 32.5 support Harris, and 35 percent remain undecided
80 percent of non-binary students support Harris
One third of those who identify as Democrats support Trump; while 4.2 percent of Republicans support the vice president
43.5 percent of support for Harris identify as independents
25.3 percent of all respondents said reproductive rights was one of their most important issues
Cost of living, housing costs, and inflation was the most important issue at 30.1 percent
